Learning note: what reduced motion should turn off

Reduced motion isn't 'no transitions at all'. A short list of what to remove and what to keep.

prefers-reduced-motion: reduce asks for less movement, not for a broken interface. Changes of state still need to be visible; they just shouldn't travel across the screen.

  • Remove: entrance animations, parallax, auto-playing loops, large slides and zooms.
  • Keep: colour and opacity changes that confirm an action, focus outlines, instant scroll jumps.
  • Check: smooth scrolling, which is motion too and should become instant.

In this journal the hero's orbit animation is the only movement that plays on its own, and it is removed entirely when reduced motion is requested.

Illustration: a circle split into a light half and a dark half, crossed by an orbit, with a sun on one side and a crescent moon on the other.
